2009 Awards of Excellence Recipients

Best Innovative Program, Large District:

Trails Challenge Program
East Bay Regional Park District

East Bay Regional Park District won the large district award for Best Innovative Program in the state by the California Association of Recreation and Park Districts (CARPD). The award was part of CARPD’s annual conference in Incline Village on April 23-26.

The Trails Challenge Program:

  • Is a self-guided hiking program with a 16-year history
  • Includes a booklet showcasing 20 of the best hikes in the District
  • Emphasizes fitness and wellness while encouraging exploration of the District's parks and trails
  • Had over 5,000 participants in 2008

CARPD was established in 1958 and is dedicated to improving the quality and efficiency of California’s recreation and park districts.  Through two joint powers authorities, the 65 recreation and park districts that are members of CARPD are eligible for reduced rates on worker compensation coverage and liability/property damage insurance – saving local communities thousands of dollars.  Each spring, CARPD hosts an annual conference and awards competition to recognize outstanding programming, facilities, and service to the community.
