Hayward Area Recreation & Park District won the large district award for Best Innovative Program in the state by the California Association of Recreation and Park Districts (CARPD). The award was part of CARPD’s annual conference in Monterey April 13-15.  

• An environmental education project funded by the State Habitat Conservation Fund
• Initiates access for first-time visitors from diverse backgrounds to the Hayward Shoreline
• District naturalists introduce 240 youth and seniors --and their friends and family-- to the shoreline’s recreational and educational opportunities
• College interns are exposed to potential careers as naturalists
• In partnership with ten other agencies
• “Explore Your Shore” successfully addresses the barriers that limit access to using the Hayward Shoreline and develops future stewards

CARPD was established in 1958 and is dedicated to improving the quality and efficiency of California’s recreation and park districts.  Through two joint powers authorities, the 65 recreation and park districts that are members of CARPD are eligible for reduced rates on worker compensation coverage and liability/property damage insurance – saving local communities thousands of dollars.  Each spring, CARPD hosts an annual conference and awards competition to recognize outstanding programming, facilities, and service to the community.
