recreation programs to improve the quality of life

2010 Awards of Excellence Recipients

Best Innovative Program, Small District:

Bears in the Park
Dunham Recreation & Park
District

Dunham Recreation & Park District won the small district award for Best Innovative Program in the state by the California Association of Recreation and Park Districts (CARPD). The award was part of CARPD’s annual conference in Monterey April 13-15.

  • Instead of cutting down damaged trees, the District started a program to create lasting art from the very foundation of the trees themselves. Thus, Bears in the Park was begun.
  • Contracted with local artist Carlton R.J. Stevens to carve the trunks.
  • Future creations are planned as trees that cannot be saved will be earmarked for art.

CARPD was established in 1958 and is dedicated to improving the quality and efficiency of California’s recreation and park districts.  Through two joint powers authorities, the 65 recreation and park districts that are members of CARPD are eligible for reduced rates on worker compensation coverage and liability/property damage insurance – saving local communities thousands of dollars.  Each spring, CARPD hosts an annual conference and awards competition to recognize outstanding programming, facilities, and service to the community.
